The Edge of Evening, an original acrylic landscape painting by Marilyn Calleja, composed of hand-painted triangles with a glowing sunset reflected across water and silhouetted trees.

The Edge of Evening

The Edge of Evening was inspired by a beautiful photograph taken by a friend at dusk. I was immediately drawn to the extraordinary sunset colours and the silhouettes of the trees against the fading light. The trees became some of my most intricate at the time, with each branch and cluster of needles built from hundreds of hand-painted triangles, carefully placed one by one.

This painting took approximately 200 hours over three months to complete. Life interrupted along the way, and there were some difficult days during its creation, but I continually found myself returning to the canvas. Painting it became both a source of joy and a place to lose myself in the work.

For me, The Edge of Evening is ultimately an invitation to pause and take in that fleeting beauty at the edge of day – when light, colour and landscape seem to shift from one moment to the next.
