The Hand that Feeds, an original acrylic landscape painting by Marilyn Calleja, composed of hand-painted triangles with a silhouetted tree against a fiery red, orange and yellow sky.

The Hand that Feeds

Originally titled Fire in the Sky, this painting was inspired by a tree in Queen’s Park in Toronto. I was initially drawn to the movement of its branches against the sky, but the more I looked at it, the more I saw something else–a hand reaching upward.
That changed the way I saw the painting, and eventually its name. The Hand that Feeds became about more than a single tree. For me that reaching hand speaks to everything trees give us–their beauty, shelter, strength and the connection to nature that has meant so much in my own life.
It’s a tree I still stop and look at when I walk through Queen’s Park, struck by its majestic presence.
